I just got tested for covid and it came back negative so I’m confused as to why I can’t smell or taste anything. I can but not at its full potential. I’m young so this can’t be due to old age but it’s getting worse over time... it started about a month and half ago has anyone else experienced this?

As part of my lupus I have experienced loss of taste and smell prior to covid and again in Feb 2020. Took a test for covid antibodies and results were negative. Have experience this throughout my lupus journey. My weight dropped due to these losses (taste and smell). This kills your desire for food because everything has no flavor or smell.

Could it be a side effect of a medication or supplement you are taking? Have you had a difficult time eating or drinking for other reasons? I suggest calling your doctor and asking if there could be a treatment or drug, or known mineral/vitamin deficiency a medication or treatment causes. For instance, Methotrexate causes folate deficiency so folate is prescribed alongside of it to counteract this. Zinc is crucial for one’s sense of taste and smell.

SLE often makes it difficult to eat a balanced diet. The disease process also uses up nutrients quickly.

Also, there are many times where I dont know I have a virus or baterial infection because my SLE symptoms mask them. Could you be carrying another virus/bacteria that takes your sense of taste and smell? Just an idea. . .

You may test negative now but that could change in a few days. There's a 14 day window and even though you might be positive you might not yet have enough of the virus in your system to show on a test. Since you have covid symptoms you may want to test again. Or as suggested in the post above, may be a lingering symptom.

Genlanco Yankowski,I hope you find some answers 😔. I went thru that for six years with not knowing what was going on. Don't give up just keep a book with daily food and symptoms. Maybe it will help a doctor one day. I hope you start to feel better soon.

Genlanco Yankowski, the anti-SSA and anti-SSB blood test. You could also ask for a ANA blood test to see if it's a autoimmune disease. I hope this helps😊
