My question is after you are placed on medication for lupus, does it effect the results of your follow up blood work. I’m still very new to this diagnosis and having a hard time getting everything straight in my mine. I’ve alway heard that one of the reasons it’s so hard to diagnose is that if you’re not in a flare your blood work could be completely normal, I really don’t know if that’s true or not. If someone has a good understanding of the blood work and what it means or if you have a good… read more

I'm afraid I am not able to help. I have elevated ANA, speckled pattern. i have several Lupus symptoms, too numerous to list. I was diagnosed and treated for Lupus for almost 3 years. Always have an underlying moderate level of pain, and severe pain in a flare.
Flash forward to this year. Appointment with new Rheumatologist in August. (because of job loss and insurance change) blood work done. Still elevated ANA but am told by this new Doctor that I do not have lupus despite my multiple symptoms. I am still on meds.
I feel like I am at square 0.

I have Lupus and even is a flare my blood work can be normal. My Rhuem. doctor did her resident training at Mayo Clinic and my other Rheum., is the head of the dept. for the medical school here, both say a Doctor must look at the cluster of the patients symptoms over a period of time and never rely on only blood results. I have fatigue, joint pain with some swelling in my hands, neuropathy from sunlight exposure, a rapid heart rate (Sinus tach)., a very slow gut and stomach emptying time (gastoparesis) and the occasional Mylar rash, along with other rashes, frequent malaise, and mild hair loss, it thins constantly.
Find a Doctor that will look to your list of symptoms and not just bloodwork. My ANA has never been positive and my CRP is rarely elevated, yet I have Lupus.

Yes, medication and SLE activity will change your blood results. We are watching my adult son for sjogrens and SLe. He has symptoms for sjogrens. Sometimes the ANA shows up as high in his blood and other times it isn’t there at all. I hope this helps understand things a bit.

But I can be flaring and have a low sed trade. Sometimes even zero. And I can be extremely swollen with a low sed rate. My doctor says I'm A zebra.
