When told to stay out of the sunlight, what does this exactly mean. I have to drive places..etc. Thanks.
Everyone is different. I don't have much trouble with the sun day to day, but I won't layout even with sun screen. I just get very tired and achey and get a headache.
A primary trigger for lupus is sunlight, so that why you've been told to avoid it. Like most things, the important parts are in the details. Yes, this means high-factor sunscreen everyday, but also when indoors in rooms with windows. It also means covering skin to protect it from the sun. There are brands that make clothing infused with SPF (Coolibar, Lands End and others). Wearing those when taking a walk, driving, or indoors near a window are important. Avoiding the sun during peak hours (10am to 4pm) during late spring to early autumn helps too. Lastly, the sun taken in through your eyes can activate lupus as well. Sunglasses with UV lens protectant is very important, and a larger frame size is helpful for greater protection. Floppy hats, can help protect your eyes, neck, and face too.
Yes. Be careful. Keep an umbrella, sunscreen, hat in your car or close to the door ao you don't forget. It can make your skin feel like it is on fire.
It means use sunscreen on your face and body whenever you go out. Wear a hat and long sleeves if possible. Stay in the shade during outdoor events.
I am not affected by the sun like so many people with lupus, but I still take precautions. Some others get rashes and flare-up. There's an old lupus book called, "The Sun is My Enemy" by Henrietta Aladjem. She describes the sun's affect on her quite well.
The sun isn't our friend. It can cause a rash. It can cause you to over heat. I often get sick to my stomach if I get too hot. The sun didn't use to bother me. I'm not sure if it's because I'm having a flare up right now or because I'm getting older but this year is not good at all
