Hi, I joined this page after my sister got diagnosed with Lupus. She is having really bad joint pains and stiffness. She's been off work almost 4 months now. She's on naproxen. Doctors have now prescribed her with hydroxychlorine 200mg
These past few weeks she's been having a lot of fevers and shivering. We live in Glasgow and it's pretty cold but she's really cold and shaking. Is that common with Lupus? Would anyone be able to advise what could help and also if the new medication mentioned is… read more
As for my anxiety, my Rheumatologist put me on Cymbalta for Fibro pain. It is a pain blocker and also an anti depressant all rolled into one! It took me about 3 months to adjust to it though.
I now this was long winded, but I wanted you to know the full story so that my recommendation makes sense. That being said, I know others have had great success doing the things that I have tried and it continues to work for them. Every body is different.
Hope this helps 💜
There are a few different things that you can try and hopefully you can see a quick improvement. These are only suggestions and I am not claiming that these will work for her, but it works for me. When I start to flare up, and I can't seem to manage it with anything that I normally can, I try changing up my food intake. I will only eat vegetables and fruits and drink tons of water or green tea. I have narrowed down what fruits and veggies that I know that cause me inflammation so of course I try never to eat those. Eating only fruits and veggies gives my body a break from having to work so hard to fight the fight that it does everyday of my life because of lupus, but also gives my digestive tract a break from having to exert energy to digest meats and grains and processed sugars. I can usually reduce my body inflammation within a day by making those food changes and I will continue eating only fruits and veggies until my body tells me that I am ready for more. It's not a life long diet for me because I went completely vegan and had no other inflammatory foods for 18 months! I tried everything holistic, I tried retraining my brain to believe that my body was healthy and 100% cured, I tried herbs and acupuncture, and chiropractic, and yoga and kale shakes. My body felt AMAZING!! I thought that I had hit the jack pot with a "cure" for myself!! I was running because I could, even though I never ever liked running, I had tons of energy and was soooo clear in my head, I literally felt that I was smart again!! Low and behold, even though I never consumed anything other than what was working for me for so long, all of a sudden the pain crept back in again and my joints were swelling and of course i was gaining weight. . So, I tried turmeric and other natural supplements to try to help with the renewed inflammation and pain, but needless to say, after about 6 months of that regression I conceded that my "cure" was not such a cure. I decided that since I am going to be in pain and gain weight I'm going to eat whatever I felt like! i gradually introduced different food to see i there was anything that i had a negative reaction to and I discovered a couple of things so I stay away from them now. Over the years, I will go into a semi-remission and as soon as I start to feel off, I quickly revert back to eating only y veggies and fruits and 7 out of 10 times I can halt a big flareup from happening.
Again, this is just me and my experiments that have worked for me. Everyone is different. But in my opinion, its the healthiest way to try to help your body to heal and it's something that you have some control over. At least it might give some small bit of relief until she can get some help from the Dr.
Hi Shaunti,
Thank you so much your response. Its just me and her so I try to be as supportive as I can for her. We've been reading so much about Lupus but it still feels like I don't know enough. She's been off work over 3 months now and it's just been so difficult trying to keep her strong. She also suffers from anxiety and with all this weakness and aches in her body her anxiety has been pretty high too. I got her some turmeric and black pepper tablets as I read they are good for joint pains, have you ever tried them? We haven't been taking her temp but I will start to. Is there anything you can recommend that helps build up her immunity? I went to Holland and barret and they suggested sambucol for strengthening her immune system. It's crazy one moment she was fine and the next everything changed. How are you doing? Hope you have family and friends to support you xxxx
First off, congratulations on being the BEST SISTER of the year!! I love that you are so supportive of her because having a strong support team in place is key to making the very best lemonade out of the most sour lemons we were handed. YAAAAY for the both of you!
Next, her fevers, what temps are they? How are they taken (Ear, forehead, orally)? And finally, what temp does she normally run when she feels good?
I can only speak for me and my sister: we are normally around 96.7 and our low grade fevers (lupus and other auto immune diseases) typically go as high as 100.4. However, I know that if her or I ever go above 101.0 then we have an infection and need to seek treatment. Usually for us, the shakes without a fever or low grade fever, indicate severe pain. The shakes with a high ever indicate illness.. Again, this is only my personal experience.
Here are some helpful tips on calming and warming the body (without high fever) to help settle the shakes: throw her favorite blanket into the dryer for 15-20 minutes to get it nice and warm! An electric blanket or heating pad is my go to! And if none of that is available, but you happen to have some rice in the house, you can quickly make your own hot sock! Take a cotton sock (the bigger the better) and fill it full of rice. Tie the open end closed with a piece of string and place it in the microwave 1 minute at a time up to 3 minutes! if you have any relaxing essential oils you can add a drop or two onto the sock. Just be cautious not to get the rice too hot because it will produce steam and the steam can burn.
Best of luck!
