I had pulmonary embolisms with Covid and now the dr is concerned about me developing blood clots when he does a hip replacement. I have to get clearance first from my rheumatologist and a hematologist, but I’m wondering if lupus makes recovering from hip surgery take longer than usual or if it is affected by lupus.

Thanks for the answers everyone. It helps to have some perspective on things I need to be aware of. I’m not taking blood thinners anymore, but my orthopedic did say I have to get cleared from my rheumatologist and a hematologist first, so that’s my next step. I’m getting a cortisol shot next week to help with the pain and hoping to get the hip replacement in October or November. I am beginning to think that maybe lupus makes any health issue worse than it would be for a normal person.

Stephanie, surgery can cause a flare, as Premier points out, but hopefully, that won't happen. If you are on immunosuppressant meds (plaquenil does NOT suppress our immunity), you may also be more prone to infection at the surgical site. Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi. I had a stroke and was put on blood thinners. I’ve had both my hips replaced. The first caused me to flare up after the operation and it took 2 weeks to get out of hospital. However, for the second one, we made sure that one of the rheumatologists was on hand and also increased my lupus meds to prevent it. I was out in 4 days. As we are all different, you could be absolutely fine. I would suggest you just make sure your surgeon talks to your lupus doc to have a plan if you do what I did. Regarding the blood no clots, I stopped taking warfarin and went on to heparin injections. This enables them operate without clotting problems. Are you on any blood thinners?
I hope this helps.
