I'm having some serious "mom guilt. " When I was diagnosed in 2002, my son was 4. His pediatrician ran labwork and we found he had a positive ANA. He had no other issues at the time.... Now he's 25. He's been experiencing joint pain and swelling. He also has the malar rash. (He just lost his job, so he has no health insurance. He is going to apply for medicaid. ) I just feel so unbelievably guilty that he's going through this. He's an avid hiker and went hiking and camping with some friends… read more

One of my daughters has been diagnosed with everything I have…along with the blood clots and retaining too much iron…
We are now testing her son. We deal with what we are dealt…our moto…”going forward” and try to look for happy!

Karen, this was not your fault, as you never intended for him to be sick. We can't do anything about our genetics, and your son will learn to live with it, as have the rest of us. Blessings and hugs to you both.

It saddens me to read this. This is a hard and difficult time for your son and your family. Please try and put that guilt out the door. It is nothing that you did or didn't do. I do understand the feeling. I worry that my MS and Lupus may show in my adult child. Autoimmune disease is highly hereditary. Fortunately, you are going to be his best advocate. He will need to lean on you. Take care of you! That will allow the stresses of working with your son doable to the best that you can muster. Utilize your lupus doctor for guidance and hopefully he takes Medicaid. If he is able to take Aleve for arthritis??
