What causes headaches in lupus?

Headaches in lupus can occur due to inflammation of blood vessels, medication side effects, and as a direct symptom of lupus activity. Some lupus medications like steroids and hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) may contribute to headache symptoms. Additionally, chronic pain and inflammation throughout the body can trigger or worsen headaches. How can lupus headaches be managed?

Treatment often involves managing the underlying lupus inflammation through your prescribed medications. Some people find relief through steroid injections in the neck and shoulder area. Working closely with your rheumatologist to keep your lupus well-controlled is key to reducing headache frequency. Pain management strategies may need to be adjusted over time based on your specific symptoms and response to treatments. How common are headaches with lupus?

While the exact frequency varies by individual, headaches are a significant symptom for many people with lupus. They often occur alongside other common lupus symptoms like fatigue, joint pain, and sleep problems. The intensity and frequency of headaches may increase during lupus flares or periods of high disease activity.

Also, watch out for food triggers like nuts, alcohol (especially wine), cheese, yogurt. I feel your pain, migraines are the worst!!!

I agree with @A MyLupusTeam Member. It can be any of those things. If they are more frequent, definitely see your primary and get referrals. I’m having chronic headaches, too, and they really impact your days. Get everything ruled out. Good luck!
