Yes, Cindy, we are more prone to cardiomyopathy and pulmonary edema, which is fluid in the lungs due to a weakened heart muscle, known as congestive heart failure. The name is confusing, because the heart hasnβt failed but is weaker than normal in its pumping capacity.
Rarely, Plaquenil taken long-term can contribute to these issues, though lupus itself can, too. Anyone dealing with this should talk to their doctors about this if taking PLQ.
How are you doing?π
Yes, pulmonary and heart complications are common in people with lupus. About half of all people with lupus develop lung-related problems, which can include fluid buildup (edema) in or around the lungs. Additionally, people with lupus are at significantly higher risk for heart conditions compared to those without lupus. If Show Full Answer
@A MyLupusTeam Member.. Thanks for your input my friend. Iβm currently still in the hospital, was admitted on Monday with an A-Fib episode, but it turns out that I also have Cardiomegaly and pulmonary edema, I had no idea, because Iβm not coughing and donβt have chest pain. Lupus is so sneaky and attacks us when we least expect it! Hopefully Iβll be home tomorrow. Have a peaceful and wonderful evening!

Cindy, How are you feeling? Please remember that congestive heart failure treatments are very effective, and people do very well on them. You will get through this, my brave warrior friend!
I'm sure they'll tell you at the hospital, but it will be very important to avoid salt and any alcohol moving forward, as well as controlling your BP well. β€οΈ
