Yes, sensitive gums are common with lupus! Many members experience sensitivity, particularly to mouthwash containing acids. This sensitivity can occur due to several lupus-related factors, including periodontal disease and dry mouth from decreased saliva production, which can affect your oral health. Here are some helpful tips to manage gum sensitivity:
- Use alcohol-free or specialized gentle mouthwashes
- Brush gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush
- Consider trying Colgate Peroxyl mouthwash, which some members have found helpful
- Maintain regular dental checkups
- Avoid triggers like salty foods, citrus, and tomatoes that might irritate your mouth

Remember to talk with your healthcare provider about any new oral care products you're considering, especially if you're taking medications for lupus.

Soft bristles toothbrush doesn't get the plaque off my teeth and my teeth tends to hurt and I had stopped using mouthwash and started (years ago, holistic beginning) using cranberry juice and swish it around and my gums stops being sensitive and stopped the bleeding. So I use medium bristle and softly brush my teeth with it.

½ cranberry juice and ½ vinegar; holistic mouthwash. 100%, tart cranberry juice not the cocktail or flavored ones or it won't work kuz of the sugar count. More tart it is, less sugar it has, the better.

A couple of ideas: Use an extra soft toothbrush. Biotene products are
good for dry mouth, which can cause sensitivity. They make toothpaste,
artificial saliva (has no taste), mouth wash. Do continue to carefully
care for your gums- be gentle and thorough. I've used on the recommended
products and they helped me. I hope you get relief soon.
