There is no specific diet, though some experts recommend a purely plant-based diet as the least inflammatory. Others recommend a Mediterranean diet, and a study done in the UK a few years ago showed that lupies who eliminated dairy and markedly increased their intake of plant foods felt better. We should avoid processed foods, sugar, salt, and fat, especially animal fats.

Please see your doctor to determine the cause of your swelling, Lynn. It could be as simple as medication side effects or venous stasis, but kidney, heart, or liver disease must be excluded. Reducing salt intake can help.

Both calorie-restricted and low glycemic index diets have shown success for people with lupus taking prednisone. Studies found these approaches led to significant weight loss and reduced fatigue without worsening lupus symptoms.

Key dietary recommendations:
- Focus on anti-inflammatory foods
- Include omega-3 fatty acids
- Choose whole grains
- Plan meals in advance, especially for flares

Always consult your doctor before starting any new diet plan to ensure it supports your lupus treatment. For swollen ankles and feet, several management strategies can help:

1. Elevate feet above heart level for 20-30 minutes
2. Follow a low-sodium diet (with doctor approval)
3. Exercise regularly to improve circulation
4. Try compression stockings (check with doctor first)
5. Use prescribed diuretics if recommended

Important: Contact your doctor immediately if swelling is sudden, painful, occurs in one leg only, or comes with breathing problems or chest pain.
