This is a common experience with lupus - joint inflammation can occur seemingly without warning. Nearly 95% of people with lupus experience joint issues, particularly affecting shoulders and upper arms. The immune system's mistaken attacks on body tissues can cause sudden inflammation, pain, and limited movement, even if you felt fine the day before. To manage these sudden flares:
- Try gentle movement and stretching to improve mobility
- Work the joint slowly, moving it a little at a time
- Consider physical therapy for strengthening exercises
- Use anti-inflammatory medications as prescribed
- Report new or worsening symptoms to your rheumatologist

Remember that morning stiffness often improves with movement throughout the day. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider to adjust your treatment plan.
