I get what you call these blood bruises on my legs and arms. I can barely bump them, and the blood bruises come up immediately. I went to see my Doctor about them, and he told me that people with Lupus have thinner skin than most people. I do not take blood thinners, and for the last two years, my legs and arms have been doing this. It looks horrible. It looks like I have this disease on my legs and arms. People do stare at them. I can't wear shorts, and when I do, they look bad. I have been… read more

I am getting much smaller ones on my forearms. I am 80 and felt that my age was at least partly responsible for thinner skin. My cat likes to slap me when she has had enough attention and I know that will cause it on older skin. Now I am wondering what else causes it to happen. It has only begun occurring in the last few months. I hope that someone will be able to find a solution to relieve it for you.

Diane, steroids or low platelet counts increase our bruising/bleeding tendency. However, I have seen many extremely fair-skinned HEALTHY patients who are older develop this issue, too, and it's referred to as "senile purpura." I don't know your age, and it's important that you have your platelet count checked if it hasn't been recently. I know it's a terribly frustrating problem, especially the skin tears. I don't know of any easy solutions, but you may want to consult a dermatologist.😘

Yes, many people with lupus experience easy bruising. While bruising isn't considered a typical lupus symptom, many MyLupusTeam members report experiencing unexplained bruises, particularly on their legs and arms, even from minor bumps or touches.

A bruise forms when small blood vessels beneath the skin break, allowing blood to pool under the skin's surface. In lighter skin, this appears as purple or reddish marks, while in darker skin, it may look brown or black. Some potential causes for this increased bruising tendency include:

• Medications commonly used to treat lupus
• Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), which can occur alongside lupus
• Anemia, which affects about half of people with lupus

It's important to document any new or concerning bruising patterns with photos and discuss them with your healthcare provider to ensure proper management and rule out any other underlying causes.

Yes. I get those also on my legs and not so much on my arms anymore. I use rubbing alcohol and that tends to make them not so sensitive

Yes, I've been having serious complications with my skin/bleeding. It's called Actinic/solar/senile purpura, palpable purpura, petechiae and other names. My skin stuck to the gauze and peeled right off. I bled for awhile, but it stopped and it healed. My derm recommended a healing ointment, between the skin and gauze. Are you photosensitive? My eruption healed, but it looked similar to those pictures and a bit worse. It swelled up pretty good, too. Mine are on my lower arms, so far. Take care.
