MCTD (Mixed Connective Tissue Disease) is different from lupus, though they can share some symptoms. MCTD is considered an "overlap syndrome" where a person experiences symptoms of multiple rheumatic diseases at the same time, including lupus symptoms.

The main types of lupus are:
• Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) - most common, affecting 70% of lupus patients
• Drug-induced lupus - caused by certain medications
• Cutaneous lupus - primarily affects the skin
• Neonatal lupus - rare form affecting newborns One key difference in diagnosis is that MCTD has a specific antibody marker - the RNP antibody test is highly sensitive (95-100%) for MCTD, while it's much less common in lupus patients (only 38-44% test positive). However, since symptoms can overlap, doctors use multiple tests and evaluate symptoms carefully to make the correct diagnosis.
