How does life look like for teens with lupus, and can your daughter continue attending school?

Yes, most teens with SLE can and do attend school! With proper management and support, many young people live full, active lives including regular school attendance.

Life with SLE varies from person to person, but here's what to expect:

Common challenges teens face:
- Fatigue and tiredness that may affect daily activities
- Brain fog that can make it harder to remember assignments or concentrate
- Physical limitations during flare-ups
- Needing time off for doctor appointments and monitoring

Supporting school attendance:
- Work with teachers and school staff to explain her condition
- Consider a 504 plan or accommodations for days when symptoms are worse
- Allow flexibility for medical appointments, which may be frequent especially in the first year
- Watch for sun exposure - UV protection is important during outdoor activities

The first year after diagnosis is critical for monitoring and managing inflammation. Regular check-ins with her healthcare team will help minimize organ damage and adjust treatments as needed.

Many parents find it helpful to educate their children about lupus using age-appropriate resources. Being open about symptoms and medication side effects helps kids understand what's happening and feel less isolated.

With patience, proper medical care, and a supportive environment, your daughter can pursue her education and maintain friendships while managing SLE.

Thank you for your reply. Currently the exhaustion and the nauseousness play a huge role. The doctors think it is a virus but to me it looks like stress and anxiety and crossing her boundaries
