Lupus can cause inflammation around the heart) called pericarditis. When I had it, I was closely monitored because I was born with a hole in my heart and a heart murmur. Thankfully, it closed up by itself and my doctors don't detect the murmur any longer. I wish you all the best.πŸ’œ

How does lupus affect your heart?

Lupus can impact your heart and blood vessels in several ways due to chronic inflammation. People with lupus have a two to 10 times higher risk of developing heart disease compared to those without lupus.

The inflammation from lupus can damage the inside of blood vessels, leading to atherosclerosis β€” where cholesterol and fat build up on artery walls. This buildup restricts blood flow and can eventually cause heart attacks or strokes. Young women with lupus face particularly high risks, with those aged 35-44 having a 50 times higher risk of heart attack than women the same age without lupus.

Lupus can also cause inflammation in different parts of your heart:

* Pericarditis β€” inflammation of the sac around the heart (affects about 25% of people with lupus)
* Myocarditis β€” inflammation of the heart muscle (affects 8-25% of people with lupus)
* Endocarditis β€” inflammation of the heart's inner lining and valves (affects 6-11% of people with lupus)

These conditions can lead to symptoms like chest pain, rapid or fluttering heartbeat, high blood pressure, and blood clots. Some MyLupusTeam members report experiencing heart palpitations during lupus flares.

Regular checkups and managing risk factors like blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes are important for protecting your heart health when living with lupus.
