I was diagnosed a month ago but think I’ve had lupus a while. Also Sjogrens. Fibromyalgia for years. But I’ve itched severely for years and mostly at night. I wake my husband. He says it sounds like I’m tearing my skin off! I usually get up and take a brush and have to scratch all over😆. Miserable! But can’t take Benedryl so what do you do 🤷🏼‍♀️

Can lupus flares cause lip swelling and severe itching?

Yes, lupus flares can definitely cause both lip swelling and severe itching. Many MyLupusTeam members have reported experiencing these symptoms during flares.

Lip Swelling During Flares

Lupus causes widespread inflammation that worsens during flares, which can affect your lips. Members commonly notice their lips swell significantly during active flares, with some describing major swelling in their upper and lower lips. The inflammation can also extend to other facial areas including the eyes, nose, and cheeks.

Itching With Lupus

Severe itching is another symptom that can occur with lupus. Some members experience periods of random intense itching that may or may not coincide with bruising. The itching can be severe enough to cause discomfort and may lead to rubbing the affected areas.

Managing These Symptoms

For itching, applying compression (like compression sleeves) can help stop the sensation. For lip swelling, using ice packs, applying lip balm with SPF 30, and avoiding sun exposure can provide relief.

Since both symptoms can indicate a lupus flare or other issues, it's important to discuss them with your doctor to determine the best treatment approach for your situation.
