So I went to the dr on Jan 18th because I have been severely fatigued with tons of joint pain to the point I felt disabled. It has been 17 days of this chronic flair up. Today I reviewed my labs and my ANA is up to 1:640. Everytime I get blood work done it is 1:160 and one time in 2013 when I was a lifeguard and spent hours in the sun it was 1:360. Seeing 640 scared me and I haven't talked to my doctor yet. I hope he calls me back tomorrow. I am in so much pain my work is being interrupted… read more

The results of an ANA test cannot be used by itself to diagnose a disease. I't not just the ratio, it's also the pattern of the ANA plate test. Your doctor also looks at you ESR (sed rate), C-Reactive Protein, anti-DS-DNA, C3&C4 complements, Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP), Complete Blood Couint (CBC), etc.

<1:40 is considered normal. 1:80 to 1;360 is suggestive of an active inflammation. Higher ratios suggest more degrees of inflammation. Again, the plating pattern is also important to help with the diagnosis. The ratio by itself does point to any specific disease process.

I've been taking plaquenil for over 5 years, and have never seen an increase in my ANA. I have found that it does reduce the frequency, duration, and intensity of my lupus flares.

One thing is you need to change jobs, I have a real problem with the sun and the humidity. It will only take a very short time for me to burn in the sun and the humidity makes me pass out, before Lupus I was not like this and when I get hot my rash comes out , my arms , chest and the butterfly rash on my face. People with Lupus have real problems being in the sun ask your doctor about it . Hop I helped, God bless and take care.

My ANA is 1:640 too. I will feel ok for having lupus and then out of no where BAM I feel horrible. I usually just crawl in bed and try and rest. Hot baths help too. Hope you feel better soon. Hugs

If you are on Methotrexate, that can cause depression. This medication does it to most people that get put on it. I have never been told what my ANA test results are. Good luck.
