My doctor put me on imuran a few weeks ago, and I’m not sure what I’m feeling is normal, can anyone tell me what I should expect?

I switched to Imuran about 7-ish yrs ago. It did not cause me any stomach upset which all previous meds had. We had to play with the dose, too much then too little, found a nice middle ground at 75mg a day. I naturally have very low wbc, Imuran can lower it, but so far I have not drpped to a dangerous level, if I do I call my hematologist will give me a shot to boost cell production. No biggie. I do also get slightly enlarged lymph nodes in my neck that could be due to the imuran, however not a deal breaker for me. A yr ago I did add Benlysta infusions to my meds and it works nicely alongside my Imuran. I still can flare but have not had a hospital stay since my very first 13 yrs ago.

What should you expect when taking Imuran (azathioprine) for lupus?

Imuran is an immunosuppressant that works by weakening your immune system to prevent it from attacking healthy tissue. It's typically prescribed when other lupus treatments haven't worked well enough.

In terms of what to expect, some people notice changes in their symptoms within the first few weeks, though it can take longer for others. Here are some things MyLupusTeam members have experienced:

Positive changes:
- Reduced inflammation and swelling
- Less joint pain
- Improved ability to move and be active

Possible side effects:
- Weight changes (some members report weight loss)
- Changes in appetite
- Digestive symptoms like nausea or abdominal discomfort

One MyLupusTeam member shared: "I have lost weight since being on Imuran. I attribute it to moving more now that the pain is less, and also my inflammation is not as bad."

If you're experiencing symptoms that concern you or affect your quality of life, reach out to your doctor. They can evaluate whether what you're feeling is a normal adjustment period or if adjustments to your treatment are needed. Never hesitate to speak up if something doesn't seem right—your healthcare provider is there to help you manage any side effects.
