Is mouth sore and lip swelling common with lupus?

Yes, this can definitely be related to lupus. About 25 percent of people with lupus develop mouth or nose ulcers, and lip swelling often occurs during lupus flares. Many MyLupusTeam members report experiencing swelling in their lips, sometimes describing it as major or huge swelling.

The mouth sores typically appear as red ulcers with a white halo, similar to canker sores. When these sores develop inside the mouth, they can cause swelling that extends to the lips, making eating and drinking uncomfortable or painful. What can help manage this right now?

Here are some things that might provide relief:

- Apply an ice pack to help soothe pain and reduce swelling
- Take an antihistamine like Benadryl if you suspect an allergic component
- Apply moisturizing lip balm to protect the area
- Avoid touching your swollen lip with your hands or fingers
- Practice good oral hygiene to prevent infection

When to seek immediate care:

Contact your doctor if the swelling worsens or if you experience breathing difficulties, widespread rash, hives, or wheezing - these could indicate a serious allergic reaction requiring emergency attention.

Since mouth sores can increase infection risk and may signal a lupus flare, it's worth reaching out to your healthcare team for guidance, especially if this symptom persists or recurs frequently.

Hello I run a support group in Southern California. I am attempting to write a book. Since, COVID the Doctors Conventions had stopped!!! I use to speak at these conventions every year. I teach these doctors what it is like to live with Lupus and a Patients point of View. They need to start these conventions up because they know near nothing about lupus. The medical books have maybe one page about Lupus and the rest is up to us. We need to educate the doctors!!!! The only Lupus Patients that receive the best care are the children!!! Oh, how I wish I was a kid again!!!
I promised myself, if I have one breath left, I will always educate people and doctors about Lupus. I am tired of hearing people say, "Oh I have heard of Lupus but, I have no idea about the disease" second comment "You look so GOOD how can you be so SICK"?? Please Pray I finish my book because the money will be for research and we need research. AIDS, gets all the money!!!!
Pray everyone!!!!

@A MyLupusTeam Member So sorry that the swelling didnโ€™t go down Tereza. Going to the ER was a good idea, Iโ€™m sure they can give you something for the swelling. Take care and hang in there, have a peaceful afternoon ๐Ÿ’œ๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿ’œ๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿ’œ๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿ’œ

@A MyLupusTeam Member i wish it went down, i used some ice and drank some allergy meds last night. I woke up worse today. I think I'm going to ER to get checked up. Thank you.

@A MyLupusTeam Member, it is the first time im developing this. Since my diagnosis in February, i recently started with Methotrexate, i think the swelling might be related to it. Thank you.
