Tinawallace2, whenever I have something as simple as a tooth pulled my dentist sends me to a "specialist" because of my Lupus diagnoses & APS. I have to take shots (blood thinners) & antibiotics 3/4 days before procedure & a week after.

@A MyLupusTeam Member It depends on what kind of dental work you're getting, I think! I remember earlier this year, I was scheduled to get my 4 wisdom teeth out, and in two offices I went to for opinions, they all said I needed to take antibiotics before and after the procedure because I had Lupus, since we're more prone to infections.

Do you need antibiotics before dental work while taking hydroxychloroquine?

Antibiotics before dental procedures are not usually needed for people with lupus taking hydroxychloroquine. They're typically only recommended if you have specific heart problems, such as:

- A heart valve replacement
- A history of endocarditis (a serious heart infection)

It's important to talk with both your dentist and rheumatologist to determine if you need antibiotics before your dental visit.

You should also let your dentist know about all medications you're taking, including hydroxychloroquine. This helps them create the safest treatment plan for you. Some lupus medications, like corticosteroids or blood thinners, might need special consideration during dental procedures.

Never stop taking hydroxychloroquine without speaking with your rheumatologist first, even for dental work.
