What are the side effects from gel or dip manicures with lupus?
Gel manicures can worsen lupus symptoms, particularly if you have photosensitivity. The UV nail-drying lamps used to cure gel polish emit ultraviolet light, which can trigger skin reactions and contribute to lesions around the nails.
For people with lupus, UV light exposure during manicures can cause:
* Worsened lupus symptoms, especially if you have cutaneous lupus
* Lesions around the nail fold (base of the nail)
* Nail ridges and splitting
* Skin rashes or other photosensitivity reactions
Dip manicures are generally safer because they don't require UV light exposure. They air-dry instead, making them a better option for people with lupus.
Safer alternatives to gel manicures include:
* Dip polishes that air-dry
* Standard nail polish with air fans for drying
* Adhesive nail stickers or press-on nails
* If you must use UV lamps, apply 100 SPF sunscreen or wear sun-protective gloves with the nail bed cut out
It's important to talk with your healthcare provider about what's safe for you before getting any type of manicure, as individual sensitivity varies.

Oh my. Do you think the bruising is from your manicure?
Seems that I’m on several teams! Since I’m new, not sure how many teams I should be on!

Thank you for this information! I had no idea that UV light used in manicures could cause symptoms and side effects due to Lupus! I've gotten my nails done once a month for years now! This last time they used dip on me and I haven't noticed any lesions or side effects, thank goodness! I will do a bit of research and see if I need to stop the manicures altogether. I would really not like to have to stop.
BTW, I added you to my team and hope you will add me to yours.
Gentle Hugs,
Becca
