I have lupus and been bipolar 1 for more than 20 years. Lupus does not affect my bipolar. Although when my lupus flares up and im bed ridden for about a week, I do cry most mornings because im frustrated that I can't do anything. I hope this helps you. But no....I do not get delusional. I would suggest if your wife is overwhelmed emotionally, a psychiatrist would be good to perhaps give your wife something to relax, i take Valium, and also a mood stabilizer, I take fluoxetine. Disclaimer: I am NOT a medical professional. Prayers for you, because it affects the loved ones, and prayers for wife.❤️🙏

How does lupus affect people mentally?

It's great that you're seeking to understand what your wife may be experiencing. Lupus can significantly impact mental health, but it doesn't typically cause delusions in the way you might be thinking.

People with lupus commonly experience:

- Depression and feeling down about their limitations
- Anxiety about the uncertainty of their condition
- Feeling isolated or misunderstood by loved ones
- Mood changes that can be related to inflammation, stress, or hormonal shifts
- Fear about the future and disease progression
- Grief over losing their "old self" and abilities

The mental challenges often stem from the physical symptoms like overwhelming fatigue, chronic pain, and lifestyle changes rather than cognitive confusion. A MyLupusTeam member shared: "My family, my husband - none of them understand what I'm suffering with."

Many find that managing stress levels, practicing self-care, resting without guilt, and seeking support through therapy can help tremendously. The emotional aspect of lupus is just as important to address as the physical symptoms.

If you're noticing concerning changes in your wife's thinking or behavior, it's worth discussing with her doctor to rule out any complications.
