Is marijuana or cannabis helpful for lupus?

The research on marijuana and cannabis for lupus is still limited and shows mixed results. Some compounds like CBD (cannabidiol) may help with inflammation and pain, but the evidence isn't definitive yet.

CBD doesn't make you feel "high" like THC does. It works with your body's endocannabinoid system, which helps regulate immune response, pain, and inflammation. Some studies suggest it might help with autoimmune conditions like lupus, while others show it could potentially accelerate disease activity.

Many MyLupusTeam members report positive experiences with CBD for joint pain, inflammation, and sleep. One member shared: "Three weeks ago, I started taking CBD oil. It has really helped the inflammation in my joints. Consequently, I've been sleeping better!"

However, others haven't found it helpful. A member who works in a medical marijuana dispensary noted: "CBD has done nothing for me." Important risks to consider:

Marijuana use with lupus comes with several concerns:

* Lung damage - Smoking can irritate lungs and cause respiratory problems, which is especially concerning since lupus can already affect your lungs
* Heart effects - Marijuana may temporarily increase heart rate and affect blood pressure, which matters because cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in people with lupus
* Drug interactions - CBD can cause liver damage when combined with certain medications and may interact with lupus treatments like hydroxychloroquine
* Product safety - Over-the-counter CBD products aren't regulated by the FDA, and studies show widespread mislabeling. Some products contain much higher THC levels than labeled, and at least one was recalled for lead contamination

One member experienced adverse reactions: "Unbearable rashes ... uuuggghhh!" The bottom line:

If you're considering trying cannabis or CBD, talk with your rheumatologist first. They can help you understand potential interactions with your current medications and assess your personal risk factors, especially regarding heart and lung health.

As one member wisely noted: "CBD oils are not for everyone. I also make sure I check everything with my doctor and pharmacy so I don't create a problem that I am not aware of."

The Lupus Foundation of America hasn't endorsed CBD as a lupus treatment yet but suggests it may reduce pain and inflammation, noting that more research is needed.
