Benlysta can increase our susceptibility to infections, like other immunosuppressants, Ashanti. Many on MLT take it and seem to tolerate it well, though. I haven't taken it but am considering it.

What are the side effects of Benlysta?

Benlysta (belimumab) can cause various side effects, and it's important to be aware of them while on this treatment. The medication has a similar safety profile whether taken as an infusion or injection.

Common side effects include:
- Fatigue
- Rash (especially if you have photosensitivity)
- Joint pain
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Fever
- Headache

Serious side effects to watch for:
- Allergic reactions (particularly with infusions, which is why they're given in a medical setting with monitoring)
- Injection site reactions (if using the subcutaneous form)
- Infusion reactions
- Infections (since belimumab affects your immune system)

If you experience any concerning symptoms while taking Benlysta, reach out to your doctor right away. They can help you manage side effects and determine if any adjustments to your treatment are needed.

It's also worth noting that if you need to stop Benlysta, withdrawal symptoms can occur, including increased fatigue, rash, joint pain, and sometimes memory issues or confusion. Never discontinue this medication without talking to your healthcare provider first, as they can help you taper off safely to minimize flare risk.

Benlysta has been a blessing to me. My kidney function improved a bit and I am off prednisone. As @A MyLupusTeam Member said, it makes us more susceptible to infection. I get all of the vaccines suggested by my doctors and frequently wash my hands. If someone is ill in your home, I suggest wiping or spraying all door handles with disinfectant.

Hi Tal, welcome. I’ve heard of Benlysta. I hope you can get some relief. I too have gotten the following vaccines: flu, COVID and RSV.
