One possibility is low magnesium. Try drinking pickle juice and see if it helps. For real, it’s a thing. We don’t know why it works but it does. If that works consider supplementing magnesium (not MgCitrate-loosens bowels, or glycinate-there is some new info out, I don’t remember what but this was my go to and I’m switching)

Why are you experiencing severe leg cramps that wake you from sleep?

Leg cramps with lupus can be extremely painful and disruptive. These involuntary muscle contractions can happen during the night and range from mild to severe. Many people with lupus experience these "jump-out-of-bed-and-stretch" cramps that make it difficult to walk or move.

Several factors related to lupus may be causing your cramps:

* Lupus-related muscle inflammation (myositis) or muscle pain (myalgia)
* Certain lupus medications as a side effect
* Dehydration or low electrolytes (potassium, magnesium, calcium)
* Nerve compression or insufficient blood flow
* Kidney-related issues, which can occur with lupus

The intense pain you're experiencing is a common complaint among people with lupus who deal with nighttime leg cramps. For immediate relief when a cramp strikes:

* Gently stretch the affected muscle - try placing your toes on a step edge and lowering your heel
* Apply heat with a heating pad or warm towel to increase blood flow
* Massage the area with ice wrapped in a towel
* Elevate your leg above heart level using pillows

If the pain persists for hours or you can barely walk, contact your healthcare provider. They can check for vitamin deficiencies, assess kidney function, review your medications, and suggest treatments like muscle relaxants or physical therapy to help prevent future cramps.

Staying hydrated and maintaining balanced electrolytes may also help reduce cramping episodes.

Your magnesium might be low but drinking pickle juice does help and make sure to let your doctor know too.
