I get retouched up every 4 weeks and on one of those weeks I get highlights put in. The product my beautician uses doesn't cause any problems. I am not her only customer that has Lupus.

I have my grey hair touched up every 3 weeks by a professional. When I first started with this specific beautician, he was putting harsh chemicals on my scalp, and it burned. So he added sugar which helped. Now he is using a gentler hair dye that doesn't burn my scalp. He also likes to blow dry my hair, but I had to stop that too and just be put under the dryer because of my low hair volume. Pulling and brushing only adds to loss of my hair. Plus, when I started losing my long hair, I decided to have it cut short. I now have it in a DA cut which I like with bangs. Much easier to handle too!

I now use a conditioning glaze that deposits color that lasts through 10 shampoos. I have no adverse symptoms with this product.

I do dye my hair every 10 weeks. I don’t have too much trouble with it. Every now and then it will make my scalp itch. You can ask your stylist to use a more natural organic coloring as well.

Can you dye your hair if you have lupus?

Yes, many people with lupus dye their hair without problems. However, some may experience reactions due to sensitivity to chemicals in hair dye, particularly p-phenylenediamine (PPD).

If you have lupus, especially with scalp sensitivity or discoid lupus, you might be more vulnerable to reactions like:

* Itchy scalp
* Hives or lesions
* Swollen lymph nodes
* Scalp irritation

Not everyone reacts this way. A MyLupusTeam member shared, "I have been dyeing my hair since 2013, but I get it done professionally and have zero problems."

If you notice persistent itching, swelling, or discomfort after dyeing your hair, it's worth discussing with your doctor. They can help determine if the dye is triggering symptoms or if you need adjustments to your lupus treatment. Consider these safer alternatives if traditional hair dye causes issues:

* Semipermanent or temporary dyes (contain fewer harsh chemicals)
* Plant-based options like henna or indigo powder (check labels to ensure no PPD is added)
* Professional application in well-ventilated areas
* Organic or gentler dye formulas

One member noted, "My hairdresser switched to a more organic, softer type of dye. That's helping."

Listen to your body. If dyeing your hair triggers flare-ups or discomfort, taking a break might help. Some members find their hair improves when lupus is stable or in remission.
