What can help with chest pain and shortness of breath in lupus?

First and most importantly, if you're experiencing chest pain with shortness of breath, especially if it's new, severe, or accompanied by dizziness, cold sweats, or pain radiating to your arm or jaw, seek emergency medical care immediately. These could be signs of a heart attack or other serious condition.

For managing lupus-related chest pain at home, here are some approaches that have helped others:

Immediate Relief:
- Apply heat or cold packs to the affected area
- Take warm baths to ease discomfort
- Rest as much as possible during flare-ups
- Wear loose-fitting clothing and avoid tight bras or underwires around the chest

Medical Treatments:
- Over-the-counter anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen or aspirin
- Prescription pain relievers if home remedies aren't enough
- Corticosteroids like prednisone to reduce inflammation
- Immunosuppressive medications for certain lung conditions

Important Next Steps:

Always report chest pain and breathing problems to your doctor right away. Lupus can affect the lungs and heart in several ways, including pleuritis, costochondritis, and pulmonary conditions. Your doctor may refer you to a pulmonologist or cardiologist for specialized testing and treatment.

Catching these conditions early gives you the best chance for successful management.
