We are more prone to these, and I always get one when taking antibiotics. I find Terazol cream the most effective and soothing for treating it.

Having diabetes or simply high blood sugars (which steroids can cause) leads to recurrent yeast infections. Please make sure your doctor checks your blood sugars and screens for diabetes regularly, since you get them so often, Krystal.

@MiaStewart--The feminine wash/douche changes the balance of the normal bacteria in our vaginas and can make us more prone to BV, or bacterial vaginosis. It's best to avoid those and just wash outer areas with soap and water.

Do you just let it take its course or go to the Dr.? @A MyLupusTeam Member

Are frequent yeast infections common with lupus?

Yes, yeast infections are common in people with lupus. Vaginal yeast infections (vaginal candidiasis) caused by an overgrowth of Candida fungus occur frequently in people living with lupus.

People with lupus develop infections two to six times more often than those without the condition. This happens for two main reasons:

- Lupus itself causes an abnormal immune response that makes it harder to fight off infections
- Immunosuppressive medications used to treat lupus weaken the immune system's ability to protect against infections

A MyLupusTeam member shared, "I've noticed bacterial vaginosis occurs frequently since starting my medicine."

Vaginal yeast infections typically cause:
- Vaginal discharge that looks like cottage cheese
- Itching or burning in the vagina and vulva
- Swelling and redness
- A burning feeling when urinating

The discharge from a yeast infection is usually odorless, which helps distinguish it from bacterial vaginosis.

If you're experiencing frequent yeast infections, talk with your doctor. They can help determine the best treatment approach and whether adjustments to your lupus medications might help reduce your infection risk.
