What medications can help manage lupus symptoms when you can't take anti-inflammatories?

Since NSAIDs aren't an option for you, there are several other medication classes that can help manage your joint pain, fatigue, and other lupus symptoms:

For pain and inflammation:
* Corticosteroids like prednisone can reduce inflammation and treat flares
* Antimalarial medications can help control and prevent flare-ups
* Immunosuppressive medications can ease symptoms and reduce inflammation

For nerve-related pain:
* Antidepressants such as duloxetine or amitriptyline can help with pain and fatigue
* Anti-seizure medications like gabapentin or pregabalin may provide relief

For fatigue:
* Certain antidepressants have been shown to help with lupus-related exhaustion

For skin and nail issues:
* Antimalarial drugs often improve skin symptoms
* Immunosuppressive medications can help with skin manifestations

It's crucial to talk with your rheumatologist about your gastric bypass history, as this affects how medications are absorbed. They can work with you to find the right combination that's safe after bariatric surgery and addresses your joint pain, fatigue, and skin concerns.

Physical therapy might also help strengthen muscles and reduce joint pain without medication. Many people find that treating lupus effectively with the right medications makes a significant difference in their overall symptoms.
