Are you eligible for disability benefits with lupus?
Yes, many people with lupus qualify for disability benefits. Lupus can significantly impact your ability to work, and if your symptoms prevent you from maintaining employment, you may be eligible for disability support.
Around 55% of people living with lupus have lost all or part of their income due to their illness. Some are temporarily or permanently disabled by lupus-related symptoms, making disability benefits an important resource.
To explore your options:
- Talk to someone on your rheumatology team about disability programs
- Consult with a social worker who can guide you through the application process
- Consider programs like Medicare and Medicaid for health insurance coverage
The financial burden of lupus can reach up to $50,000 per year when combining medical costs and lost income. Disability benefits can help ease this burden and provide crucial support when lupus affects your ability to work.

Yes, many of us are receiving SSDI or SSI. I was denied on my first try and approved on appeal. That is the general experience with lupus patients.

Yes I applied many years ago and was denied. I’m on Soc Security/Medicare and Med Supplement now.

Talk with your doctor, they would have to write a letter about your issues with Lupus. My doctor did that for me and I was granted Disability status.
Good luck.
