So I suffer from For lupus-related photosensitivity and every time my skin breaks, the scar heals white. This includes sunburns b/c they turn into scabs. This is how I was eventually diagnosed but it took 10 full months so some damage was not repairable and I look like I have Vitiligo. I have struggled with finding a good affordable product since. Dermatologist wants me to buy his own sunblock but its very expensive and is so high in zinc that it's practically baby butt cream and I turn grey… read more

What sunblock works well for lupus-related photosensitivity without leaving a white or grey cast?

Finding the right sunscreen can be tricky, especially when you need high protection without the zombie look! For lupus photosensitivity, you'll want a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least 70 SPF that blocks both UVA and UVB rays.

Some MyLupusTeam members have found success with sunscreens containing Helioplex, which provides extra protection by blocking more rays. One member shared, "I found 100 SPF — it's helped hugely!"

Here are key features to look for:
* Broad-spectrum protection (UVA and UVB)
* SPF 70 or higher (some members use 100 SPF)
* Consider formulas with Helioplex for additional coverage
* Reapply every hour to two hours, especially after getting wet

Remember to apply sunscreen even under clothing since most fabrics only offer about SPF 5 protection. You'll also want to wear it on cloudy days since clouds don't block most UV rays.

Beyond sunscreen, consider layering protection with sun-protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses. Avoiding peak sun hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) can also help prevent scarring and flares.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but in my case no sunscreen is effective in preventing the ugly rash that itches until you lose your mind and then scars your skin. For the last 25 years I never go outside without wearing heavy denim or leather sleeves, gloves, hat with full veil and very good sunglasses. Needless to say I rarely go outside in the summer because the heat of all that is intolerable. My skin also burns under fluorescent lights, those horrible curly bulbs and regular light bulbs if I’m directly in front of them. I’ve just learned to live in the dark. I wish you well and pray you have a different outcome.
