For a while, I couldn't eat fresh strawberries because my lips would swell and itch. Now, I only eat frozen strawberries. Check the foods you eat and see if any of them play a part in your rash. We get the weirdest symptoms. It's hard to know what causes them. I hope that you find out the source of your discomfort.

Are you experiencing persistent lip swelling with an itchy rash around your lips?

Yes, many MyLupusTeam members have dealt with lip swelling and irritation. One member shared, "Every single time I flare, this happens to my upper and lower lip." Another mentioned, "I have systemic lupus and have been having more frequent bouts of lip swelling."

Lupus can cause lip swelling in several ways:

During Flares
Lupus causes widespread inflammation that worsens during flares, which can affect your lips directly.

Sun Sensitivity
If you have cutaneous lupus or are photosensitive, sun exposure can trigger lip swelling and rashes. Using lip balm with SPF 30 or higher is important.

Related Mouth Issues
Lupus can cause angular cheilitis (cracking and inflammation at the corners of the mouth), mouth sores, and dry mouth - all of which can lead to lip irritation and swelling.

Skin Sensitivity
Increased skin sensitivity from lupus may cause reactions to cosmetics or skin care products, which could explain the itchy rash around your lips. Here are some ways to manage your symptoms:

* Apply ice packs to help soothe pain and swelling
* Use moisturizing lip balm with SPF 30+ when going outside
* Try an antihistamine like Benadryl if you suspect allergies (one member found this really helpful)
* Avoid touching or scratching the affected area
* Stay hydrated and practice good oral hygiene
* Consider allergy testing if swelling happens frequently

Since your symptoms are persistent and uncomfortable, it's important to contact your rheumatologist or dermatologist. They can determine if this is related to a lupus flare, an allergic reaction, or another condition like angular cheilitis that commonly occurs with lupus. They can also prescribe appropriate treatments like topical steroids or antifungal creams if needed.
