Are swollen lymph nodes in your armpit and arm related to your lupus flare?

Swollen lymph nodes are often a sign that your lupus is flaring up. Because lupus causes your immune system to go into overdrive and attack healthy tissues, this triggers inflammation that can make your lymph nodes swell as your body tries to deal with what it perceives as a threat.

A MyLupusTeam member shared, "I get them when I'm flaring or coming down with something." Another member described dealing with swollen lymph nodes under their arms that were "so swollen and painful" for an extended period.

Since this is happening three weeks into your first flare in 8 years, the timing strongly suggests it's connected to your lupus activity. However, swollen lymph nodes can also indicate infections or other health issues. You should definitely contact your healthcare provider about this, especially since:

- The lymph nodes are hard and painful
- This is a new symptom you haven't experienced before
- The swelling has persisted for weeks

Your doctor may recommend testing or adjust your lupus treatments with corticosteroids or immunosuppressive drugs to better control the flare. Sometimes applying a warm compress or heating pad can help reduce pain and discomfort while you wait to see your doctor.

As one member noted, "Stress makes it worse. Stress makes anything worse" - so try to rest when possible.

Hi my name is Judy. The problem is is you never know from day to day or minute to minute what's going to happen. The doctors have no idea. Because the scientists haven't figured this out. I hope you have a wonderful day bless you big hugs

JudySanford, I agree with you never know from day to day or minute to minute what's going to happen.

Swollen lymph nodes can occur with lupus, but it's best to be examined by your doctor to ensure something else isn't causing this, Mark. The only arm lymph nodes are in the elbow region, but we can also get nodules under the skin from lupus.
