LenoreSteed, I have had a lot of dental too. Ended up getting a partial on bottom right side and it cover 1 tooth in left bottom. If u could afford permanent I would get them. When they took the teeth I paid extra to have bone put in place so I wouldn’t lose the jawline. So maybe one day I will get permanent put in. But healing just took a few weeks longer as everything seems to do with lupus.

Do dental implants take longer to heal with lupus?

It's completely understandable to feel stressed about getting dental implants, especially when you're managing lupus. Many MyLupusTeam members have shared experiences with extensive dental work.

People with lupus do face some additional considerations with dental procedures. Lupus can increase your risk of infection and slower healing, particularly if you're taking immunosuppressive medications. The healing process may take longer compared to someone without lupus.

Here are some important things to discuss with both your rheumatologist and dentist before your implant procedure:

* Infection risk: Lupus and certain medications can weaken your immune system, making infection more likely after dental work
* Medication adjustments: You may need to temporarily adjust your lupus medications before and after the procedure
* Healing timeline: Your healthcare team can give you realistic expectations for your specific situation
* Preventive antibiotics: Depending on your health history, you might need antibiotics before the procedure

One MyLupusTeam member shared they "had to be off my meds for a certain amount of time before my dental work" - but never stop taking medications without talking to your rheumatologist first.

Make sure both your dentist and rheumatologist are communicating about your care plan. They can work together to minimize risks and support optimal healing for your implants.
