Have you ever been prescribed a muscle relaxer? I take Flexeril whenever my muscle pain becomes unbearable. Try talking to your PCP and find out what medications you are allowed to take pre-surgery.

What other conditions are related to systemic lupus?

Living with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can sometimes mean dealing with additional health conditions. Here are some that commonly occur alongside lupus:

Autoimmune Conditions:
- Sjögren's syndrome (causes dry eyes and mouth)
- Raynaud's phenomenon (fingers and toes turn white or blue in cold)
- Rheumatoid arthritis

Cardiovascular Issues:
- Atherosclerosis (buildup in arteries)
- High blood pressure
- Increased risk of heart attack and stroke

Other Related Conditions:
- Kidney inflammation (lupus nephritis)
- Anemia
- Type 2 diabetes (increased risk)
- Lung disease
- Serositis (inflammation around body cavities)

Some lupus complications can develop without obvious warning signs. It's important to stay in regular contact with your rheumatology team and report any new symptoms, even if they seem unrelated to lupus.

Many MyLupusTeam members share experiences of managing multiple conditions. One member mentioned, "I have both lupus and Sjögren's," showing how common it is to have overlapping conditions.

Your healthcare provider can help monitor for these conditions and create a treatment plan that addresses all your health needs.

I suddenly developed a terrible pain and weakness in my hips and thighs. I’m having a knee replacement in 1 weak. I was told by my rheumatologist that this most likely a flare of muscles tissue-maybe due to the painful arthritic knee. But that I can’t have steroids to help because of the surgery coming up. I’ve had muscle pain that my Dr. would note as arthralgia, but this is so much more extreme and difficult to deal with-with a bad knee besides!

Thank you MrsV23, yes, I have had muscle relaxers but it’s been quite awhile. That sounds like a good idea, that would really help. I’ll check with my Dr. tomorrow!
