How can you manage a week-long field trip with joint pain and fatigue while newly diagnosed with lupus?
Congratulations on planning this special trip with your son! Since you're only three weeks into hydroxychloroquine treatment, it's important to know that it typically takes several weeks to months to feel the full benefits, so you may still be experiencing significant symptoms.
Here are some practical tips for managing your trip:
Pace Yourself
- Build in rest breaks throughout each day
- Consider taking short 20-minute naps when possible to recharge
- Don't feel pressured to do every single activity
Manage Joint Pain
- Bring any pain medications your doctor has prescribed
- Use supportive shoes with good cushioning for your hips and tailbone
- Consider bringing a small cushion for sitting during tours or bus rides
Combat Fatigue
- Stick to your medication schedule - take hydroxychloroquine consistently
- Stay hydrated and eat regular meals
- Avoid caffeine after early afternoon if it might interfere with nighttime rest
Communicate Your Needs
- Let trip organizers know you may need to sit out some activities
- Don't push through severe pain or exhaustion - listen to your body
Since you're newly diagnosed, talk with your doctor before the trip about managing symptoms and whether you need any adjustments to your treatment plan.

Try doing some light stretches for your tale bone. There should be some good ones on YouTube. Yoga has helped me a lot.
I stretch my back by doing the child pose. Sitting on your knees and then stretching forward on the floor is amazing for me.
Even Tai Chi helps because it's slow moving.
Have a great time!!
