It's a great question, and one many people with lupus wonder about. The short answer is: possibly, but the research isn't fully clear yet.

Lupus causes your immune system to become overactive, and food allergies also involve an immune system response. This overlap may explain why some people with lupus seem to develop new food allergies or sensitivities. A MyLupusTeam member shared: "I went from no allergies as a child to over 18 food allergies when I finally got tested." Another MyLupusTeam member noted their food reactions lasted only a few months before disappearing entirely โ€” so experiences can vary widely. A small 2025 study found that over half of participants with lupus had high levels of antibodies against common food allergens. However, more research is still needed to confirm a direct link. It can also be tricky to tell the difference between a food sensitivity and lupus symptoms, since both can cause:

- Nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea
- Bloating

This is why it's worth talking to your doctor or rheumatologist if you notice new reactions to food. They may refer you to an allergist for testing to pinpoint what's going on.

EveCedar...I also had an allergic reaction after eating gulf shrimp...I did take a Benadryl which definitely helped. I recently ate shrimp from Argentina, no allergic reaction this time. So unfortunately I will not eat gulf shrimp again. ๐Ÿ™
