Yes, nail loss is something others with lupus have experienced. A MyLupusTeam member shared that their "fingernails and toenails are starting to fall completely off," and another noted their nails were separating from the nail bed. So you're definitely not alone in this.

Lupus can affect nails in several ways, including:

- Nails separating from the nail bed
- Ridges, splitting, or softening
- Discoloration (dark, white, or purple tones)
- Swelling and redness around the nail
- Nails becoming fragile and breaking easily These changes are thought to be caused by inflammation and how the immune system responds in lupus. Lesions at the base of the nail (the nail fold) are often the root cause.

The good news is that for some people, once lupus is better managed and under control, nail problems can improve or even disappear. A MyLupusTeam member shared that after diagnosis, their nails "did all kinds of weird things" but improved with treatment.

It's worth bringing this up with a rheumatologist or dermatologist, as there may be prescription options available to help.
