Yes, swelling and inflammation in the feet and legs is something many people with lupus experience. It can be tricky to figure out whether it's the lupus itself or a medication causing it — and sometimes it's both!

Yes, swelling and inflammation in the feet and legs is something many people with lupus experience. It can be tricky to figure out whether it's the lupus itself or a medication causing it — and sometimes it's both!

Swelling in the feet and legs can be caused by a few different things related to lupus:

- Lupus itself — inflammation from lupus can cause fluid buildup (edema) in the feet, hands, and legs
- A lupus flare — swelling can be a warning sign that a flare is happening
- Lupus nephritis — about 50% of people with lupus develop this kidney complication, which can cause fluid retention and swelling in the legs and ankles As one MyLupusTeam member put it, *"I have so many health issues and take so many tablets, I don't even know what's side effects and what's illness anymore."* — which really captures how confusing this can feel.

It's really important to let your doctor know about the swelling, especially if:

- It comes on suddenly
- It only affects one leg
- It's painful
- Your leg looks pale or feels cold
- You have shortness of breath or chest pain alongside it

Never stop taking CellCept without speaking to your doctor first, but do bring up feeling generally unwell — they may be able to adjust your dose or explore other options.

Yes, if I am on my feet too long my legs tighten up and my ankles visibly swell. Elevating them and resting usually relieves the inflammation.

Yes, BG, my feet and ankles get inflamed at times. Rarely, when I was extremely overworked during my training decades ago, my knees also became inflamed.

Have you tried the Cellcept on a full stomach? If it's still not agreeing with you, please talk to your doctor about alternatives. Someone had a good suggestion about taking something for nausea, but it's usually best to avoid treating side effects with yet another med instead of switching meds.

If you haven't had any major organ complications, Benlysta or Saphnelo are alternatives to ask your doctor about that may be more tolerable.
