I literally looked in the mirror yesterday and saw facial hair on my jaws and screamed 😱 😭 πŸ’€ my aesthetician said I could do something called electrolysis. I feel so irritated and just over all this stuff!!

Hair growth and acne occur because prednisone has a little androgen-like (male hormone) effect, Empress. I get this, too. It's annoying, but sometimes we must take it to stay healthy. The more we can avoid prednisone because of the many side effects, the better, but it's necessary at times. Hugs.

First of all β€” the scream is completely valid. 😱 You are absolutely not alone in this! Facial hair is a known side effect of long-term prednisone use, and many MyLupusTeam members have experienced the same thing. The good news is that this side effect is often linked to the dose and duration of prednisone. When the dose is lowered or stopped (always under a doctor's supervision β€” never stop suddenly), these changes can improve or go away.

In the meantime, your aesthetician's suggestion of electrolysis is a legitimate option many people explore for unwanted facial hair. It's worth also mentioning it to your rheumatologist, as they may:

- Review your current prednisone dose
- Discuss whether it can be reduced
- Suggest other ways to manage this side effect

It's completely understandable to feel frustrated and overwhelmed. Managing lupus is already a lot, and unexpected changes to your appearance on top of that is genuinely hard. Be kind to yourself β€” you're dealing with a lot. πŸ’™

I been taking prednisone for over 20 years. I been on a very low dose for years. I'm currently taking 2mg a day. My doctors want me to get completely off. I know it's a mind thing but I think I feel better taking them. I have never gotten facial hair.

@A MyLupusTeam Member it wasn't as noticeable until they stopped the spironolactone a few weeks ago and things been out of control. I'm trying to be patient
