First, take a breath β€” it makes sense that this feels overwhelming right now. A positive biopsy is a significant step toward understanding what's going on in your body, and the blood work that follows is a natural next step for your doctor to get the full picture.

When a biopsy comes back positive for lupus, doctors typically order blood tests to confirm the diagnosis and check how lupus may be affecting different parts of your body. Here are some common blood tests they may be running and what they look for:

- ANA (Antinuclear Antibody Test) β€” Checks for antibodies your immune system is making against your own body, very common in lupus
- Anti-dsDNA & Anti-Smith antibodies β€” These are more specific to lupus and help confirm the diagnosis
- Complete Blood Count (CBC) β€” Checks red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, which lupus can affect
- Complement levels (C3 & C4) β€” Low levels can signal active inflammation
- Kidney function tests β€” Lupus can affect the kidneys, so these are important to check
- Inflammatory markers (ESR, CRP) β€” Help measure how much inflammation is happening in your body Waiting a week for results is genuinely hard, but these tests together help your doctor build a complete picture so they can create the best care plan for you. When results come in, don't hesitate to ask your doctor to walk you through each one β€” you deserve to fully understand what's happening with your health.
