Swelling in the feet and legs during activity is something many people with lupus deal with β you're definitely not alone in this! A MyLupusTeam member shared, "My feet, ankles, and hands are really puffy and swollen β so much that they hurt."
There are a few reasons this can happen with lupus:
- Lupus itself can cause fluid buildup and swelling, especially during a flare
- Lupus nephritis (kidney involvement) affects about 50% of people with lupus and can cause leg and ankle swelling
- Medications like prednisone or NSAIDs can cause fluid retention
- Circulation changes during activity can cause hands and feet to swell Here are some tips that may help manage the swelling:
- Elevate your feet above heart level for 20β30 minutes at a time
- Exercise regularly to improve circulation
- Follow a low-sodium diet (check with your doctor first)
- Stay hydrated and keep moving β as one MyLupusTeam member put it, "Drink as much as you can and move, move, move!"
- Try compression stockings (consult your doctor first)
It's really important to let your doctor know about this swelling, especially if it's getting worse, is painful, or comes on suddenly. They may want to check kidney function or review your medications.
