AI did a good job at explaining this. Think of your kidneys as a filter. Like AI said when protein is in your urine it should not be there. This means you have holes in your filter as protien is coming through and it should not be there. There are blood vessels around your kidneys that can be easily crushed with high blood pressure and or high blood sugar. I used to drink green tea as it was a diuretic (as well as lots of water) and helped lower my blood pressure. You can ask your doctor about green tea. Green tea also provides extra blood flow to your kidneys too. Doctors can provide medication to help the blood to flow to your kidneys and also lower your blood pressure (if you have high b/p). I eat vegan as I had high cholestrol in the past and when I went vegan I lost my b/p and my cholsterol. Meat raises cholestrol which also is made of plaque which can narrow the blood flow to vital organs. I even had plaque in my eyes from meat and I saw it like I saw it in my fathers eyes. When I saw that plaque in my eyes and had raised cholestrol levels my LDL was 140 and after going vegan it went down to less than 100. I also went on a low carbohydrate diet. I thank God everyday about the story of Daniel in the bible in all he told the kings servants we will eat vegtables and not the meat or wine from the kings table. I do eat tuna every now and again (my husband thinks he's helping me). But I do this very sparingly. Daniel and his friends were much healthier than the others. Any little thing does help I am noticing with Lupus and as it turns out this little thing that I did years ago is the reason I don't have high cholestrol or high blood pressure yet I have Lupus. Many of my family members have suffered from heart attacks, strokes and kidney disease but I watch my sugars, check my urine for protien (still negative), and my weight and O2 sat every day and if I notice a change I adjust my diet. I know about me before the doctor knows. Right now I am in remission and I am learning to stay in remission I have to pray and ask God to give me the strength as this Lupus diet is hard. I leave the stress to God and do not over do it physically, and stay out of the sun. I praise God for His Word because its holding me as I almost died 3x in 2024-2025 and the doctors here could not help me but Jesus the master physician did. I am praying for you Marie. God bless

I have had lupus nephritis during the inflammatory stage i was advised to reduce proteins, salt and drink water. Once the inflammation was settled returned to a diet low in salt, slowly added proteins and this included, eggs, milk, meat initially fish, chicken and red meat only in small quantities. Fruit and vegetables as tolerated, I have issues with certain foods. Highly processed foods are kept to a minimum. Monitoring body swelling is essential, i don't have high blood pressure. Kidney function loss 30%. I'm 77 my rheumatologist is happy where we are at. I hope this helps someone. SLE is a long journey.

@A MyLupusTeam Member The waiting can be worrisome; I don't know how responsive your doctor is but Niranjana is right not to panic or speculate - protein can be due to many things. Eating protein does not cause protein in the urine though - enjoy your chicken. 🙂

I just did a 24 hour urine test (turned in yesterday) because I have too much protein in my urine. The creatine levels were normal so far. I'm still waiting on more results. My doctor just didn't want to assume a spot test that was given was the full picture.
