Mixed Connective Tissue Disease (MCTD) is what's called an "overlap syndrome." This means it involves symptoms from multiple rheumatic conditions happening at the same time, which can include lupus-like symptoms.

MCTD can involve symptoms associated with:
- Lupus
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Myositis (muscle inflammation)
- Scleroderma

So while MCTD isn't exactly the same as borderline lupus, it can absolutely include lupus-like symptoms without meeting the full criteria for a standalone lupus diagnosis. A key marker for MCTD is a positive RNP antibody test. Some early symptoms to be aware of include:

- Raynaud's phenomenon (fingers/toes turning blue or white in the cold)
- Swollen hands
- Joint pain and inflammation
- Hair loss
- Sun-sensitive skin rashes
- Trouble swallowing

It's worth having an open conversation with your rheumatologist about exactly where your symptoms fall and what your test results show. Many MyLupusTeam members have shared similar experiences of navigating an MCTD diagnosis that leans toward lupus, so you're definitely not alone in this.
