Great question! The shingles vaccine is an important topic for people with lupus. The key factor is whether the vaccine contains a live virus β and the traditional shingles vaccine (Zostavax) does. Live-virus vaccines are generally not recommended for people with lupus who are taking immunosuppressive medications.
However, there is a non-live (recombinant) shingles vaccine called Shingrix, which is generally considered safer for people with lupus. It's always best to check with your rheumatologist before getting any vaccine, as timing and your current medications matter a lot. Common side effects of the shingles vaccine can include:
- Mild fever
- Rash
- Temporary swelling of lymph nodes
- Joint pain or minor allergic reactions
Serious side effects are rare. Since lupus can affect how your immune system responds, your doctor may want to check your immunity levels or adjust the timing based on your current treatment plan before giving the go-ahead.
Bottom line β don't skip the conversation with your rheumatologist. They'll help figure out the safest option for your specific situation! π

I have had shingles twice and I had to beg to get the shots before turning 50. If you are someone who reacts badly to new treatments, I would find out as much as you can and discuss with doctors.
