Are you wondering what a pulmonologist does and when you might need to see one with lupus?

A pulmonologist is a lung specialist. Since lupus affects the lungs in about half of people living with it, seeing one may become part of managing the condition. A rheumatologist may refer to a pulmonologist if any of these lung-related symptoms or complications come up:

- Chest pain or shortness of breath
- A persistent dry cough
- Fatigue related to breathing difficulties
- Suspected pleuritis, pneumonitis, pulmonary hypertension, or interstitial lung disease (ILD)

One MyLupusTeam member shared: "I have ILD. I do see a pulmonary doctor since my first time in the hospital because my breathing was bad to the point it affected my heart."

Early reporting of any breathing or chest symptoms gives the best chance at successful treatment and reducing long-term lung damage. If chest pain or shortness of breath comes on suddenly, seek emergency care right away — don't wait for an appointment.
