I do have Stage 3 kidney disease. GFR was at 45. She said it's not that serious yet. She is trying to find out what is causing this. In February, I was good. I dropped so much so fast. My primary doctor said my lupus has done it. She thinks I'm in a major flare. It is affecting my kidneys, lungs, heart. What else is there. Both doctor took me off of some medicines and changed some medicine. They are trying to find out what is dropping my BP. It's been running below 100 since before the… read more

What a whirlwind — getting to the specialist, new diagnoses, medication changes all at once. That's a lot to take in, and it makes complete sense to want to understand what's happening and what comes next.

What a whirlwind — getting to the specialist, new diagnoses, medication changes all at once. That's a lot to take in, and it makes complete sense to want to understand what's happening and what comes next.

The good news is that your doctors are actively working to find answers, and catching kidney involvement at Stage 3 means there's still meaningful time to slow things down. Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid, similar to prednisone. It works by reducing inflammation and calming the immune system — which is exactly what's needed during a major lupus flare. It can be very effective, but there are some important things to be aware of while taking it:

- It can affect potassium levels, so blood tests to monitor this are important
- Long-term use can raise blood pressure — though in your case BP is already low, so your doctors will need to monitor this carefully
- It can cause other side effects with prolonged use, so doctors often aim to taper off it when possible Given that your kidneys, heart, and lungs are all involved, here are some key things to focus on right now:

- Keep all follow-up appointments — your doctors need to track how quickly things are changing
- Monitor your BP closely and report any readings that concern you
- Watch for worsening symptoms like increased fatigue, shortness of breath, muscle cramps, nausea, or swelling — these can signal kidney function declining further
- Don't stop or adjust medications without checking with your doctors first, especially since they're already making careful changes One MyLupusTeam member shared this encouragement: *"I cannot stress enough how important it is to take the medications prescribed by your rheumatologist, listen to your body... eat a healthy and balanced diet and exercise regularly."*

You're doing the right things by getting to the specialists. Keep advocating for yourself — you're not alone in this.

No biopsy done. I've seen them once and go back in September. The are changing meds around and checking tests. I now have to go to a Cardiologist. They said it's not that serious yet. We can work on the kidneys.
MY PROBLEM IS eating. I don't like salt, so what I get is in the foods. I have gained 10 lbs. I really need help with the eating foods for the kidneys.

I'm sorry I missed this message earlier. How are you doing now? Dexamethasone is a steroid. Did you have a kidney biopsy?
