Hi Jamie,

I have read that low vitamin D levels can cause hair thinning and loss. My rheumatologist at Johns Hopkins likes his lupus patients to have a vitamin D level of at least 50. He informed me that low vitamin D levels can cause more disease activity and worsening symptoms.
I am so sorry that you are having to deal with this issue and am hoping it is only temporary. Take care!

I know there are some prescription medications for hair loss. I have never been on them so I don’t know if they work. I hope you find something to help.

Hair loss is a really common and frustrating symptom of lupus, so you're definitely not alone in dealing with this. The good news is there are several ways to help manage it!

One of the most important things to know is that keeping lupus itself under control is the best way to reduce hair loss. Talking to a rheumatologist about your current treatment plan is a great first step. Here are some gentle hair care tips that may help reduce shedding:

- Use a mild shampoo, like baby shampoo, with a leave-in conditioner
- Avoid heat styling tools, tight hairstyles, and chemical treatments
- Try coconut oil as a conditioner to reduce breakage
- Comb gently and let hair air dry when possible
- Limit sun exposure to your scalp, as UV light can worsen hair loss Some MyLupusTeam members have found success with supplements like biotin, fish oil, and vitamin D, though results vary. One member shared that taking the max dose of biotin daily helped tremendously alongside other supplements.

Always check with your doctor before starting any supplement, as some can interact with lupus medications. A dermatologist or rheumatologist may also be able to offer prescription options, such as:

- Topical steroids like clobetasol
- Steroid injections in the scalp
- Minoxidil
- DHEA (only as prescribed β€” note it's not recommended for men with lupus)

Don't hesitate to bring this up at your next appointment β€” hair loss is absolutely worth discussing! πŸ’œ
