That sounds really uncomfortable, and it's completely understandable to feel unsure about where the pain is coming from β€” the kidney area and certain GI issues can feel surprisingly similar!

Here are a few things worth considering:

- Kidney involvement is a known complication of lupus, so pain in that area should always be taken seriously
- Gastritis can sometimes radiate or cause pain that feels like it's coming from your back or sides
- Pancreatitis, which affects up to 30% of people with lupus, can cause upper abdominal pain that spreads to the back

Some warning signs that mean you should seek care right away:

- Pain that is severe or getting worse
- Nausea, vomiting, or fever alongside the pain
- Swelling, changes in urination, or unusual fatigue

The safest step is to contact your doctor or rheumatologist as soon as possible and describe exactly where the pain is, how intense it was, and how long it lasted. Don't try to guess between the two β€” that's what your care team is there for!

Tracking your symptoms (what makes them better or worse, when they happen) before your appointment can really help your doctor figure out what's going on.

Please get checked out today, Judy! If your doctor can't see you, this sounds like a good reason to visit urgent care. Keep us posted.😘
