Members responded with care to a question about blurry vision after starting Prednisone, with the consistent advice being to see an ophthalmologist as soon as possible rather than waiting. Several members shared personal experiences with developing cataracts from long-term Prednisone use, and one noted that having diabetes alongside Prednisone can cause sugar spikes and insulin resistance, which can also worsen vision. A recurring theme was the difficulty of tapering off Prednisone with Lupus, with one member sharing that adding a biologic medication helped them finally stop taking it.

There are some eye diseases diabetics get as well as cataracts from prednisone. I suggest you try to see your opthalmologist again as a precaution.

@A MyLupusTeam Member, sadly, prednisone is a necessary evil for many of us to function each day.

@A MyLupusTeam Member, I understand what you mean when you say how hard it is to get off prednisone. For several years, I couldn't go below 5 mg without flaring. I let my doctor know that I was eager to stop taking it because it had done so much damage to my joints. We discussed it and he cut me down to 2.5 mg as a trial and I was holding on pretty well with mild flares. When I started taking Benlysta, I was finally able to completely stop taking prednisone. Please talk to your doctor about whether adding some type of biologic medication to your regimen would be a good idea for you.

In answer to your question about cataracts, I developed them after over 30 years of taking prednisone. Please remember we develop our illnesses and symptoms at different times. I still suggest you see your opthalmologist again soon.

My first question is how old are you, because you look 12 y/o.
I took prednisone at start of my Lupus. I ended up with cataracts.
Yes, it took about 8 to 9 months before I noticed a change in vision. My mistake was not seeing a doctor for another 4 months. But I didn't know the risk, because no one told me. That is why I am so happy this exists. Hopefully and unfortunately the new members find this site and can read others stories and ask questions.
